Rituals and Celebrations
The festival begins with the ritual sacrifice, followed by the communal sheepskin-drumming and salang dances led by the shibi. These activities are accompanied by the chanting of traditional Qiang epics, singing and wine drinking, creating an atmosphere of joy and merriment. By the end of the day, family heads conduct worship ceremonies within their homes, making sacrifices and offerings to honor their ancestors and ensure family harmony.
The Qiang New Year Festival is deeply rooted in the traditions and customs of the Qiang people. It serves as a time for the community to come together in reflection and celebration. The festival includes a solemn ritual sacrifice of a goat to the mountain, symbolizing a plea to the heavens for continued prosperity and expressing respect for nature. This ritual is performed by villagers who don their finest ceremonial attire, and it is overseen by a shibi, or priest.
